Winter Birthday at Sun Mountain Lodge

My birthday is January 10th. Having a winter birthday in Washington means cold and snow. I’ve headed for warmer weather for many of my birthdays, but this year I decided to embrace the cold – and Sun Mountain Lodge in Winthrop, WA was the perfect place to do it.
My husband and I headed for our winter getaway on a Thursday and stayed for just two nights. We arrived just in time for our dinner reservations at the dining room. Since it was my birthday, we went all out on a very fancy meal. The food was really good – the prawns that came with my steak were aaaahmazing. And the drinks! Let me tell you – if you’re a person that likes choices, you will LOVE it there. The drink menu and the wine list are never ending!
Our room had the coziest cabin feel, complete with a fireplace and very large balcony. There are no TVs, but there was classical music playing in the room when we arrived, which I loved – such relaxing vibes! Don’t forget to bring a book, and you can catch up on some reading while you relax in a comfy chair by the fire.
The next morning, we had breakfast back in the dining room – and we actually got to enjoy the view this time. It’s spectacular, even with the fog! Breakfast was delicious, and the coffee was flowing.
After breakfast we decided to check out one of the two hot tubs. We had it to ourselves, and it was amazing! This was the highlight of the getaway for me, and exactly what I envisioned when I imagined celebrating my 29th birthday.
We spent the afternoon snowshoeing on one of the many trails that are accessible from the resort. There’s a ski shop where we rented from. We only the did the two hour rental – you can check out their rates here.
After snowshoeing we headed back to the hot tub for a nice soak. I anticipated sore muscles, and this helped. ;)
For dinner we went to the bar, right next to the dining room. Our waiter was awesome and recommended the curry soup with croutons. I took his word for it, and it was delicious.
The next day we checked out and headed home, stopping at Cinnamon Twisp Bakery in Twisp, WA for some strong coffee and delicious pastries.
I would definitely visit Sun Mountain Lodge again, it was lovely! There are so many things to do, you don’t ever have to leave the resort unless you want to. Where are your favorite winter getaways?

Until next time.
